providing the ideal way to study human creativity. The American Museum
of Ceramic Art in Pomona averages five exhibitions per year in which
audiences have the chance to observe these faxcinating vestiges of
humankind as well as watch educational videos and participate in
experiential workshops. A two-year grant of $24,400 will fund an

Dedicated
to issues of community, diversity, and social justice, 18th Street Arts
Center is Southern California's premiere international artist residency
and contemporary art center. A two-year grant of $36,700 will help
support increased involvement of guest artists and curators in the

The
Gabriella Axelrad Education Foundation provides dance instruction at
little or no cost to ethnically diverse and economically disadvantaged
children that reside in Los Angeles' inner city. The Art Commission's
two-year $27,500 grant supports the everybody dance! Program, which
provides ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and modern dance classes to nearly
1,000 children in the Pico-Union, Rampart, and Koreatown communities of

As
the largest non-profit film exhibitor in the nation, the American Film
Institute (AFI) is committed to sharing cinematic art not only with the
County's diverse communities, but also with the next generation of
fimmakers. Awarded a grant of $233,500, the institute will be able to
support AFI FEST, the longest-running film festival in L.A. During the
ten-day event, AFI will showcase over a hundred feature films created
by both emerging fimmakers and the great old masters. Third District,

The
HeArt Project links overlooked teenagers--those who have dropped out of
school, been expelled, incarcerated, and/or are teen parents--in
alternative high schools with professional artists, cultural centers,
and communities to imagine, produce and present new work. Through three
different levels of programming, including Arts Workshops and
Scholarships, these teens are givin a chance to advance and excel
artistically. The Arts Commission's two-year $30,300 grant will be used
to support new educational workshops in order to further this mission.

The
Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Pasadena presents a series
of 50 free outdoor concerts every summer in a variety of musical
genres. With the help of the Arts Commission's $16,600 two-year grant,
they will continue to revive the use of historic out-door band shells
across the county, as well as bring music into the lives of people of
all ages, backgrounds, and tastes through its performances. Fifth

The
Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) is a non-profit
organization devoted to promoting an appreciation of Indian cinema
within the culturally diverse communities of Los Angeles. During the
five-day event, films about the Indian diaspora by Indian and
international filmmakers are showcased to audiences. The Arts
Commission's $12,500 grant will help support the salary of the Festival

Creating,
performing and experiencing stories through music are the foundation of
LA Oper's Education and Community Programs. With the support of the
Arts Commission's two-year $293,100 grant, students and professional
artists produce and perform opera together, teachers learn how to
invigorate curriculum with oper, and schools and families experience
live opera in theaters and libraries across the County. First District,

Los
Angeles Filmforum is the city's oldest organization screening
experimental and avant-garde film and video art, documentaries, and
animation. Now in its 31st year, Filmforum highlights the hand-crafted,
non-commercial creative efforts of the County's finest media artists,
young and old. A two-year grant of $2,800 helps with the artists. Third

Echo
Park Center is a volunteer-run, non-profit media arts organization
located in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Equipped with a
comprehensive small format film equipment and service department, the
Center provides free and nominal cost media arts education programs and
is committed to nurturing the talent of local emerging and student
filmmakers. The Arts Commission's two-year grant of $23,200 will be
used to fund fimmaking classes for neighborhood youth aged 13-19. First

With
its two-year grant of $37,600, The African Marketplace, Inc. will be
able to support development staff for the African Marketplace and
Cultural Faire. This exciting celebration, which spans three weekends
out of the year, represents various African and South American nations
by showcasing traditional music, dance, and artwork, increasing the
cultural awareness of its audience members and contributing to the
vitality of the County's tourist economy. Second District, Supervisor

Ballet
Folklorico Del Pacifico (Pacifico Dance) is a professional dance
company founded under the principles of preserving, evolving and
presenting Mexican culture through music and dance. In addition to
offering its audiences thrilling performances, they are dedicated to
educating Los Angeles' culturally diverse communities and providing
Hispanic/Latino audiences with a form for developing pride in their
heritage. The Arts Commission's two-year $23,800 grant will be used to
support a marketing campaign to increase the company's visibility and
reputation in the arts community. First District, Supervisor Gloria

Furious
Theatre Company is a versatile ensemble of professional artists
producing provacative, edgy, and innovative new plays that impact the
community and attract new audiences. The Arts Connission's two-year
$26,200 grant will be used to support the company's ability to
copensate its cast members. Fifth District, Supervisor Michael D.

INCA
presents an exciting program of music from Peru for audiences of all
ages. The Arts Commission supports INCA's outreach program through a
two-year $20.600 grant. The program includes free presentations at
libraries and senior citizen centers, featuring music from the native
Incas, the Hispanics from the coastal areas, the Blacks from the
coastal villages south of Lima and the natives from the Peruvian and
Bolivian Amazon jungle. Third District, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky
Founded
over 35 years ago in the Santa Clarita Valley, the Canyon Theatre Guild
presents over 280 performances of ten full-scale shows each year. In
addition, the Guild hosts an array of theatre workshops open to the
public, as well as donates gallery space to Santa Clarita's Artists'
Association. A $43,000 two-year grant from the Arts Commission will be
used to hire Canyon Theatre Guild's first full-time Technical Director.

Based
in Glendale, Los Angeles County's culturally-rich Armenian enclave, the
Lark Musical Society is dedicated to enhancing and developing an
appreciation for Armenian musical arts. The Arts Commission's $37,200
two-year grant supports the Society's Dilijan Chamber Music Series.

The
artist-run Blank Theatre Company is committed to furthering the
vitality, stability and development of live theatre in Los Angeles. The
Arts Commission's two-year grant of $33,000 will support the Annual
Young Playwrights Festival, the premier nationwide forum dedicated to
developing and producing plays and musicals by playwrights 19 years of

The
mission of the Japanese American National Museum is to promote
understanding and appreciation of America's ethnic and cultural
diversity by preserving, interpreting, and sharing the experiences of
Japanese Americans. $98,700 in grant funding from the Arts Commission
is supporting the 1st & Central Concerts, a free, outdoor concert
series featuring global music and showcasing L.A.'s unique cultural

Over
the past decade, northeast Los Angeles has undergone what can only be
called a vast cultural revitalization. Established in the heart of what
is now one of the County's most vibrant and artistic areas, the Eagle
Rock Community Cultural Association is dedicated to presenting
innovative and multicultural programming to this community. The Arts
Commission's $28,800 two-year grant supports the development and

Scott
Boylston's How Women Become That More Dangerous is one of the many
thought-provoking images in the Center of the Study of Political
Graphics' collection. With its vast archive of domestic and
inernational posters documenting movements for social change, CSPG is
reclaiming the power of art to inspire people to action. The Arts
Commissions's two-year $23,900 grant will fund CSPG's efforts to build

The
California African American Museum presents the works of modern African
American artists while maintaining an impressive permanent collection.
A two-year $45,700 grant will be used to support the first
retrospcetive of painter/sculptor Artis Lane. This exploration of
Lane's creative vision spans more than 60 years, and includes works
representing her current metaphysical, sculptural pieces, reflecting
her continuing evolution as a woman and an artist. Second District,

Since
1982, Celebration Theatre has stood as the only non-profit,
community-based professional theatre in Los Angeles dedicated to
progressive gay and lesbian issues. With a rich history of standout
productions, Celebration Theatre continues to pave new ground and seek
out contemporary gay and lesbian voices that speak to the world at
large. With a two-year grant of $11,200, the organization will be albe
to supplement the salary of their Artistic Director. Third District,

The
American Youth Symphony (AYS) offers premium artistic opportunities to
the most qualified young musicians around the County. Supported by a
two-year grant of $36,000, the AYS will be albe to maintain its Music
Outreach Program, which provides music education to children attending
